The Antigua citizenship process, stage by stage

Becoming a citizen of Antigua & Barbuda by investment follows an eight-stage path that typically runs 4–6 months, from first consultation through due diligence and the verification interview to approval, contribution and passport.

The whole journey is completed remotely — you never need to set foot in Antigua to apply. Below we walk each stage in order, explain the two that decide your timeline, set realistic expectations on timing, and state plainly which tasks we take off your hands and which stay with you.

The eight stages

From first call to passport in hand

Every application moves through the same sequence. We manage each stage and report progress at every transition rather than leaving you to ask.

    Consultation

    We assess your household, your genuine travel patterns and your objectives, and confirm whether Antigua is the right programme before anyone commits. Free, confidential, and the stage at which we tell you if the answer is no.

    Engagement and document checklist

    We formally open your file and issue a checklist built for your specific family — passports, civil certificates, police clearances and source-of-funds evidence, with certification and translation requirements spelled out per document.

    Due-diligence preparation

    We assemble and pre-check the background file against ECCIRA-era standards, resolving gaps and reconciling your source-of-funds narrative before submission so the official screening has nothing to query.

    Verification interview

    Mandatory since December 2023 for all applicants aged 16 and over, conducted online at ~$1,500 per person. We rehearse the ground it covers and make sure your supporting evidence is to hand.

    Filing and government review

    The application is formally submitted and independently assessed, including background checks run by the authorities themselves. We track progress and answer queries, usually within the same working day they arrive.

    Approval in principle

    A successful review produces an approval confirming the government is satisfied with your eligibility and that you may proceed to the investment stage. Nothing has been contributed up to this point.

    Contribution and oath

    You complete the agreed contribution or investment and take the oath of allegiance — the two formal commitments that convert an approval into citizenship.

    Certificates and passports issued

    Your certificate of registration and Antigua & Barbuda passports are issued and delivered, completing the process for every person in the application.

Due diligence and the interview decide your timeline

Six of the eight stages are administration. Two of them determine whether your file runs to 4–6 months or drifts toward up to 9 months.

Due diligence

Due diligence is the heart of a modern Caribbean application and the stage that most affects your timeline. Every applicant aged 16 and over is independently screened: identity, criminal record, source of wealth and reputation are all examined, alongside open-source and adverse-media research.

Under ECCIRA the scrutiny is deliberately rigorous. A file that is complete, internally consistent and clearly evidenced clears far faster than one that prompts follow-up questions — and the follow-ups are cumulative, because each one restarts a review cycle.

That is why we pre-check every document and reconcile the source-of-funds narrative before submission rather than after. The work is identical; doing it in the right order is what saves months.

Stage four

The verification interview

Mandatory since December 2023 for every applicant aged 16 and over, at roughly $1,500 per person. It is conducted online by an authorised agent and is best understood as structured verification, not a test you can pass or fail on performance.

The interviewer confirms who you are and works through key elements of your background and the origin of your funds. Well-prepared applicants find it a formality. The applicants who struggle are those whose answers do not line up with what was filed — usually through imprecision rather than dishonesty.

Realistic timing

What moves a file to the fast end, and what does not

The headline timeline is 4–6 months from filing to approval. In 2026 two pressures push individual files toward up to 9 months: a higher volume of applications across the region, and the more demanding due diligence that ECCIRA introduced. Neither is within an applicant's control and neither is negotiable.

What is within your control is the quality of the file. Re-submissions, missing documents and unexplained gaps in a source-of-funds story are the main causes of delay, and each one resets a review cycle rather than adding a day. This is the entire argument for investing effort at the front end: the same documents assembled carefully before filing produce a materially different timeline from the same documents assembled reactively afterwards.

Process questions

Common questions about how it runs

How long does the whole process take, realistically?
4–6 months from filing to approval is the honest range for a clean file. In 2026 some applications extend toward up to 9 months because regional volumes are higher and ECCIRA screening is more demanding. The single biggest factor in staying at the fast end is a file that does not generate queries — which is what the preparation stages exist to achieve.
Do I need to travel to Antigua at any point?
No. The entire application, including the verification interview, is completed remotely. We manage the file from Dubai, so there is no requirement to fly to Antigua to apply, to be interviewed, or to receive your passport. After you become a citizen the obligation is 5 days within the first 5 years, primarily in connection with passport renewal.
What is the verification interview, and can I fail it?
Since December 2023 every applicant aged 16 and over completes a mandatory interview, conducted online by an authorised agent at roughly $1,500 per person. It is structured verification rather than an examination — the interviewer confirms your identity and walks through elements of your background and the origin of your funds. You cannot fail it on eloquence. What causes problems is an answer that does not match the documents already filed, which is exactly what preparation prevents.
What actually causes delays?
Almost always the same three things: a document that is missing, expired or improperly certified; a source-of-funds narrative with an unexplained gap; and an inconsistency between what was filed and what was said at interview. Each triggers a query, each query resets the clock, and none of them are the government being difficult. They are the reason we pre-check rather than file and hope.
What happens if my application is refused?
A refusal at the due-diligence stage means the contribution has not yet been paid, so the $230,000 is not at risk. Fees already incurred for screening and processing are not recoverable, because the work was performed. More significantly, a refusal is recorded and becomes a disclosable fact for other programmes. This is why we screen candidly at the outset, including telling applicants when we think a file should not be submitted at all.
